Listening to the NTV debate on the Proposed new Constitution, especially on the abortion clause, I’m left in more dilemma. In the debate room all the contending parties were well represented with expert defense of their stance; the reason they are voting either YES or NO.
In the opposing side strange bedfellows are propagating the NO campaign with vested interest and pure intention properly represented. I love listening to Reuben Kigame and his take on issues, he did not disappoint tonight. The clergy made no mistake to send one of Kenya’s finest interpreters of the Word; to say the least, his ‘apology’ on abortion leaves me challenged for the remaining six days. It is enough to say he is one of the few people opposed to the draft Constitution with genuine cause. I am now persuaded that no amount of debate and/or analysis can adequately and conclusively handle this topic. Here at play is Logic verses the Bible. While logic advocates kill the child and save the mother, the Bible states; pray, do your best and leaves the rest to God, He only to decide which life to take… tuachane tu nayo.
The general clergy on the other hand have made it no secret their contempt on the entrenchment of Kadhi’s courts in the document. As a Christian personally I feel our pastors are entitled to the ‘benefit of sympathy’ given that 80% (or so we are told) of Kenyans are Christians. Despite the harmless nature the Kadhi’s clause (it handles marriages, divorce and inheritances between Muslims) a section of Christians simply can not stand it in the supreme law of the land. As I said I don’t fancy anything Islam; not with its nature of religious extremities and fundamentalism that provide the platform for terrorism and jihad. While it is not proper to say all Muslims are terrorists I think it is acceptable to conclude almost all terrorists are Muslim. So the reason I am not opposed to both Kadhi’s and abortion is not because I’m anti Christian but because we simply can not afford the cost of rejecting the draft. Razing the entire house down is one but not the best of options for killing a rat. Almost in its entirety, the contents of the draft are a mirror of the Christian way of life, so to speak. I mean, we are Christians, we have been, our schools, in our homes and work places bear the hallmarks of the faith we profess; societies enact laws/rules… in fact laws emanate from our culture. That’s why we don’t borrow Constitution but we draft, therefore, the draft Constitution is Christian in all manner given the percentage of the faithful in this country. So the Kadhi’s is like the only bean in a githeri potiful. We may allow it for religious and cultural tolerance tantamount to Christian ideals.
As for the political class in the ‘Reds’ camp, well, we don’t need to go far to seek answers. The Mois and Rutos of this world will never cease to amaze. The Rtd. President is one person who doesn’t want to see his mistakes corrected during his lifetime. After 24 years of misrule, land grabbing and brainwashing Kenyans, making them believe certain things are unachievable, he won’t just sit back and watch his wretched legacy reversed. Well, na hiyo yote ni maendeleo. Mheshimiwa Ruto on the other hand; my opinion is, the guy may just as well be looking beyond his nose. Succession politics are around the corner, what other platform does one need to parrot around? The idea here is do what you can do to keep yourself in the people’s consciousness; and that includes going against an idea whose time has come. Yes! Those are the leaders we have for the Kenya we want. Lakini bwana mheshimiwa na hayo mashamba makubwa makubwa mlitoanga wapi? Hapa Nyamira tunafinyana!!!
My parting word: please Kenyans lets go to the referendum on August fourth and vote YES. Even if it means less to you remember it shall be told to the generations to come that when it mattered most you rose to the occasion, appended your signature on the history making exercise, passed the Constitution and delivered it safely to the next generation.
Sawa!
